Made by high-end camera maker Red, the Hydrogen One was first unveiled in July 2017 as the world’s first smartphone with a holographic display. However, the company never officially announced the release or shipping details. Now, the company’s CEO James Jannard hinted through Red’s official forum on a possible timeline of pre-orders and release of the Hydrogen One smartphone. In the forum, detailing some specification update and the progress with the device, Jannard wrote, “Official ship date for carrier phones is going to likely be sometime in the summer. ‘Unlocked’ Pre-orders will, however, ship before that.” He further went on to reveal that there will be a Hydrogen Day at Red Studios to preview the technology and demonstrate how to become a content provider and show to pre-order customer “probably in April”.
The eye-watering price tag for the smartphone coming from a camera brand is due to the use of nanotechnology for the 5.7-inch holographic display that allows the switch between 2D, 3D and holographic multi-view content with ease.
The rear panel of the Hydrogen One smartphone is built from metal and kevlar. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 835x SoC with an unspecified amount of RAM and storage. It comes with a dual-camera setup at the back with dual-LED flash. The selfie camera will also be supported with a dedicated flash.
Other features include a 4,500mAh battery, dual-SIM support, USB Type-C port, and the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack. The phone will feature what is called as 4V or four view technology which will make it one of a kind device. The technology allows the device to handle all types of media, including 2D, stereo 3D, AR, VR, and mixed reality without the need for additional hardware such as headset or glasses.
Jannard explains the working of the 4V technology in the forum, The 4V files match the pixel resolution of a traditional 2D file, which is great for downloading. The resolution perception is just different. The horizontal resolution of 2D is now split into depth layers. It gives a completely different feeling. All the pixels are there but instead of looking at a pic, you are immersed in the image. It is quite spectacular.
