Reliance Digital seems quite bullish about the upcoming festive season, and is reportedly targeting to be among the top three smartphone companies in the country. Currently, the top three smartphone brands in India by shipment volumes include Samsung, Micromax and Intex. Reliance Digital has a growing portfolio of LYF-branded smartphones priced between Rs 2,999 and going past the Rs 20,000 mark. According to estimates, the company shipped 5.5 million LYF devices in the first two quarters of this year, and in the month of August alone it shipped a million units, timing it along with the Jio launch in September. To put Reliance Digital’s shipment numbers into perspective, IDC says that Micromax shipped 3.5 million units, while the likes of Intex and Xiaomi shipped 2 million and 1.5 million units respectively in Q2, 2016. By shipping around a million units a month, Reliance Digital will easily overtake Intex to become the third-largest smartphone vendor in the country behind Micromax in this quarter. LYF became the fifth largest smartphone player in the second quarter by making it mandatory to buy a LYF smartphone to use Jio SIM card before Jio opened it up to other smartphone brands in phases. According to ET, Reliance Digital is is banking on the upcoming festive season to sell most of the devices to end users. Analysts believe that of the units shipped, Reliance Digital has managed to sell about 80 percent of them. “The effort is to be number two or number three this quarter. The inventory is being brought in constantly to meet demand, especially now that Jio has been launched,” the publication quotes a source as saying.
Reliance Digital has rapidly expanded its portfolio of LYF smartphones with VoLTE support, and within the first four months it became the fifth largest smartphone vendor in India. At the Reliance Jio commercial launch earlier this month, Mukesh Ambani talked about the company’s plans to steadily launch more affordable LYF 4G smartphones with price tags of Rs 3,999, Rs 4,999 and Rs 5,999.
It is not surprising to see the demand for LYF smartphones, as they remain one of the easiest ways to get your hands on a Jio SIM card. Instead of having to stand in long queues, you can simply buy an affordable LYF smartphone, get a free SIM card, and take advantage of Jio’s Welcome Offer. Alternatively, as we have seen, many opt to use these smartphones as a high-speed Wi-Fi router for connecting their other devices.
