Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) is said to be in advance stages of talks with Disney-controlled UTV to provide content for its upcoming 4G network, the Financial Times reports. RIL has pan-India spectrum to provide 4G services and will roll-out an TD-LTE network. The tie-up with UTV will give it access to entertainment content like Bollywood movies, games (Disney acquired Indiagames last week) and children’s entertainment content. The two companies are expected to ink the deal in coming weeks, which also indicates RIL could be very close to the launch of its 4G services. It remains to be seen how it plans to tie-up its data-focused LTE network with voice services and provide devices (smartphones, tablets, etc) to users to utilize its services. At the moment, there are no smartphones or tablets commercially available in the market that support TD-LTE for RIL’s network. Most probably, it will start with USB modems (dongles) for wireless broadband Internet access and then roll-out more services as compatible devices are made available.
