Reliance Jio Fiber FTTH rollout reportedly begins in Mumbai, offers up to 100Mbps speed free for 3 months

Piloting the rollout in Mumbai, Reliance Jio plans to expand FTTH service to top 100 cities in India.

Reliance Jio has already disrupted the Indian telecom space with the launch of its 4G LTE services, and now the company aims to change the broadband landscape too. Back in September last year, the company went into early testing of fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) service that promises broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps. Now, the company has reportedly started rolling out its ‘Jio Fiber’ FTTH service in Mumbai.

According to a report on India Today, the service is available in some buildings in the Southern Mumbai areas, such as Walkeshwar Road and Nepeansea Road. Rushabh Vora, a resident of Rahul building in Walkeshwar Road told the publication that Jio Fibre connectivity is available in his building and people are already using it. While FTTH service promises speeds of up to 1Gbps, users are getting anywhere between 70Mbps to 100Mbps.

As an introductory offer, Reliance Jio is giving users three months free unlimited high-speed internet access. However, users need to pay charges of Rs 4,500, for installation and the router. There is no word on how much users will have to pay after the three months free period ends, nor there is any word on how to apply for getting aJio Fiber FTTH connection. However, just a few months ago we came across a report stating that the plans could start at Rs 500 per month. BGR India has reached out to Reliance Jio for more details on FTTH connection. ALSO READ: Reliance Jio Fiber FTTH 1Gbps broadband tariff plans to start at Rs 500: Report

We have also come across leaked tariffs before claiming Reliance Jio would offer both speed and volume-based tariffs. Speed-based tariffs are likely to have five plans offering speeds between 50Mbps and 600Mbps and validity of 30 days. The volume-based tariff could also come with 30 days validity with data download limits between 5GB to 60GB. A special tariff plan with30 day validity, speeds ranging from 10Mbps to 60Mbps and up to 600GB data download limits could also be offered. However, these are just leaked tariff plans, and the actual tariff whenJio Fiber FTTH service goes live could be completely different. ALSO READ: Reliance Jio could soon launch 4G VoLTE-enabled feature phones priced under Rs 1,500

Jio Fibre broadband is quite similar to your existing wireline broadband service, except for the fact that it uses fiber optic technology for establishing high-speed connection. Unlike your existing broadband, FTTH can offer speeds up to 1Gbps (or 125MBps). Do note, here MBps is ‘megabytes per second’ and not Mbps ‘megabits per second’. ALSO READ: Reliance Jio beats Vodafone, Airtel in 4G data speeds: TRAI

In simple words, the network is capable of downloading 125MB per second. Theoretically, for downloading a video of 500MB, it would roughly take about four seconds. Mukesh Ambani mentioned during the Reliance Jio commercial launch, the service will be offered to both home and business subscribers. But there is no word on when the commercial rollout will begin. ALSO READ: Mukesh Ambani announces Reliance Jio Happy New Year Offer, here’s everything you need to know
