Reliance JioPhone is reportedly strategizing a little extra focus on the rural areas of the country. The company already has set up an assembly facility in Chennai, and another one in Tirupati is underway. At the beginning of the JioPhone journey, the company shipped 6 million phones from China, but has now moved the assembly entirely to Chennai, a LiveMint report reveals. We have already started assembling in Chennai; the capacity is enough to meet current requirement. The Tirupati plant, once the land is allotted, should come up in 12 months. The first batch of Jio Phones from this (Tirupati) plant should be out within 12-18 months, the publication reports a person familiar with the development as saying. Just last week, Reliance Jio s parent company, Reliance Industries Ltd, signed an agreement with the Andhra Pradesh government, under which the company will invest Rs 15,000 crore in an electronics manufacturing plant on a 150-acre site near Tirupati to manufacture mobile phones and set-top boxes, PTI reported.
At Uttar Pradesh Investors Summit 2018, Reliance Jio Chairman, Mukesh Ambani announced that the company would make available two crores of JioPhones in the state in the next two months. In addition to that, Ambani also announced some large investments in the state. He committed that Reliance Jio will invest Rs 10,000 crore in Uttar Pradesh over the next three years. The company has already invested Rs 20,000 crore in the state.
Simultaneous, the company is reportedly investing a lot of its resource in building a sales network in rural areas, apart from making the Jio Phone available on online platform Amazon. The company runs Jio Centres in urban areas and Jio Points, which are small offices in semi-urban and rural pockets, offering after-sales services and customer assistance, the LiveMint report reads.
Earlier this month, Reliance Jio also made Facebook available on Jio Phone.
