Earlier today, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) chairman and MD Mukesh Ambani made a video broadcast address where he announced some key details related to Reliance Jio. He spoke about Reliance Jio s progress since the commercial launch, interconnect points issue, mobile number portability (MNP) and extension of Welcome Offer in the form of Happy New Year offer. According to Ambani, the purpose of Welcome Offer was to test the network capabilities, get customer feedback and iron out the issues. However, users have been facing problems, especially when making voice calls to users on other networks. Since the call failure issues are not yet fixed, Ambani has decided to extend the free usage offer for another three months. Call failures Since its launch, Reliance Jio has been battling incumbent telecom operators. The inadequate number of points of interconnect offered by telecom operators have resulted in as many as 900 crore blocked calls from top three operators. However, the only silver lining is that the block rate has drastically gone down from 90 percent to 20 percent, and Jio further expects this to go down.
Aaadhaar based eKYC Jio has successfully rolled out eKYC across 200,000 outlets, which is same as the total number of ATMs in India. The company also expects to double this to 400,000 by March 2017. eKYC has also help Jio to activate connections in five minutes.
Mobile Number Portability (MNP) For users who don t wish to change their existing mobile number, Jio has also introduced MNP, which allows them to migrate their existing number to Reliance Jio.
Home delivery of Jio SIM There are a lot of customers who wish to get a Jio connection but are unable to make it to Reliance Digital or Reliance Digital Xpress Mini stores. For such users, Jio has also started home delivery of SIM cards. It is being launched through MyJio app and will be available across top 100 cities in India by December 31 2016. Data speeds to improve With 52 million subscribers taking complete advantage of bandwidth on the network, a lot of users have been experiencing lower data speeds. Ambani mentioned that 92 percent of base stations are offering consistently high data speeds, and it looks to further de-congest the remaining 8 percent in the coming weeks. He also mentioned that 80 percent of Jio users consume less than 1GB of data every day but the remaining 20 percent were consuming “disproportionately higher” amount of data, which was ruining the experience for the majority 80 percent users. To tackle this, the New Year Offer has a fair usage policy limit of 1GB of data daily, which Ambani claims is 30 times the average usage on other networks.
JioMoney With JioMoney app, the company aims to help the adoption of digital money and cashless way of living. The company will deploy millions of touch points with Aadhaar-based micro-ATMs to help convert physical money into digital, and vice-versa.
