Jio may decide to extend freebies by a couple of months beyond March 2017 if incumbent telcos get more aggressive on 4G pricing, Rajiv Sharma, telecom analyst at brokerage HSBC, said in a note, ET reports. Talking of incumbent telcos, the likes of Airtel and Vodafone have hit back at Jio’s freebies by introducing plans that offer cheaper mobile data and free voice calls. Even the likes of Idea Cellular has launched plans that offer free voice calls. These counter plans have been introduced within a week of Jio announcing its Happy New Year Offer, and analysts have expressed their surprise at how early the incumbent operators seemed to have given in. Jio’s freebies have been a huge hit among subscribers, and a new report by the TRAI proves it. This report claims that Jio added nearly 16 million users in September, which is far ahead of market leader Airtel‘s 2.4 million new users. Idea Cellular and Vodafone, on the other hand, were able to garner nearly 1.91 million and 525,281 subscribers respectively. This sort of uptake has helped Reliance Jio notch up nearly 60 million subscribers in less than three months, with the company claiming that over 600,000 subscribers were being added every day.
It remains to be seen if Reliance Jio does extends the validity of its freebies beyond March 31 2017. TRAI for one has shown a lot of interest in the new Happy New Year Offer and has said that it plans to examine the fine prints of the offer.
