Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) indicated that it is planning to disrupt the broadband market in the country when it announced its JioGigaFiber service at its 41st Annual General Meeting (AGM) last month. The announcement came as no surprise as the industry was looking forward to the announcement after rumors about the service started floating on the internet as early as last year. As previously reported the registrations for the service has started today. This new FTTH (Fiber-to-the-home) service will cover 1,100 cities across the country while taking on the competition to established Internet Service Providers (ISPs) including private players such as Bharti Airtel, ACT, Hathway and Tikona, as well as state-owned operators including BSNL and MTNL. RIL added that it will offer download speeds up to 1Gbps along with additional services such as VoIP calling and IPTV (Internet-based TV streaming), and Smart Home services with the help of its set-top box GigaTV . This means that the company will also take on DTH industry in addition to ISPs. According to previous reports, the company has been testing the service since last two years while offering 700 Mbps speeds on average. The company claimed that this is enough for streaming 4K content or running VR-based apps.
JioGigaFiber registration and roll out
Interested internet users need to head to Jio.com or in case they are Reliance Jio users than their MyJio app to register for the service now. The registration is free of cost and you will be prompted to add details including your contact details, email ID, address, and other things. The reason the company has added a registration process is to see where the highest demand for JioGigaFiber is and then focus on those areas across the country to ensure fast rollout. The company will gradually bring JioGigaFiber to all 1,100 cities but that is a long process.
It was also reported previously that the company will also prioritize the localities with the highest demand inside cities to ensure that they reach the maximum number of users in the shortest time. Once the company has ensured that the essential infrastructure is ready in your area then it will send an installation team at your home.
