Reliance Jio is gearing up to launch its much-awaited 4G services in the coming weeks with the company saying it is in a ‘high state of readiness’. This company revealed this during its first-quarter earnings briefing. It also comes a day after a report claimed that Jio was targeting August 15 date for the rollout. We are moving towards complete readiness for the launch of Jio,” Anshuman Thakur, head of strategy and planning at Reliance Jio told reporters during the briefing. We have spent Rs 1.34 lakh crore towards capital expenditure for Jio, of the committed capex of Rs 1.5 lakh crore. While Jio’s plan is to deploy a pan-India 4G network, it is not completely ready in four circles, namely Rajasthan, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Thakur said it may take four to six more weeks to prepare the network in these circles. Also Read - Jio Freedom Plans 2021: Jio launches 5 new prepaid plans with no daily data limit - check details
Touted as the world’s biggest startup with an investment in the tune of Rs 1.5 lakh crore, Jio says around Rs 1.34 lakh crore has been used for setting up the network. The rest of the money will be used to expand the network’s coverage to around 90 percent of the population.
“At Reliance Jio, we have built an entire ecosystem that will allow Indians to live the digital life to the fullest. This transformational ecosystem consists of broadband connectivity, devices and powerful applications and services which will be available to every consumer in India, Thakur was quoted as saying.
Speaking of hardware, Jio has so far launched 20 LYF-branded smartphones in India priced between Rs 3,000 and Rs 20,000.The company has revealed that it has so far sold about two million LYF branded handsets till date. As for the services ecosystem, it already offers a bunch of apps like JioPlay, JioBeats, and JioNews to name a few. The company also revealed that the average monthly data consumed by its users has exceeded 26GB, which is up from 18GB in the previous quarter.
Everything Reliance Jio said during its earnings briefing seems positive but it has so far refrained from revealing a date of launch. It is easy to get excited with such announcements and leaked reports, but ever since Jio started testing its 4G services among its employees last year, there have been reports about a launch every few months. Some even claimed that Jio was waiting to iron out issues before rolling out its services by the end of this year. While August 15 now seems like a likely date of rollout, we would still advice a bit of patience.
