It is no secret that after disrupting the telecom space, Reliance Jio has its eyes set on the Direct to Home (DTH) space as well. While there s still no word on when the company plans to roll out its services, leaks around this launch continue to trickle out. Now a set of photos have surfaced online, which allegedly show Jio s upcoming set-top-box. The leaked image, shared by Candytech, show a blue-colored retail box with the Reliance Jio branding. The rest of the images show the set-top-box from different angles, including the various ports at the back. Ports include standard cable connector, HDMI, USB, and audio, video output, along with an Ethernet port which allows users to connect their broadband cable to the STB. As for the overall design, it is a pretty standard affair, but what s worth noting are the machine-drilled holes at the top that could possibly dissipate the heat from the box. While this isn t the first time photos of a Jio-branded set-top-box has surfaced online, these new photos are different from the previous leak. The last leak showed a circular set-top-box, and a Jio-branded remote control as well. Jio is expected to offer live TV streaming, along with a bouquet of 350 channels that includes over four dozen HD channels. Another interesting feature is reportedly called catch up , which will let users watch shows from the previous seven days. The remote control will be used for more than just changing channels and controlling the volume. It is expected to have a built-in mic, and support for voice search commands.
Just like the telecom space, Reliance Jio s entry into the DTH space is expected to have a disrupting effect. The company s impending entry could see incumbent players cutting tariff rates by nearly half, which is basically good news for end users.
Speaking of disrupting the set order, Jio s 4G services continue to give nightmares to rivals like Airtel, Vodafone-Idea Cellular and others. In nearly no time, the company has garnered over 100 million subscribers, and recently revealed that 72 million subscribers were shifted to Prime service in a single month. In celebrating the milestone, Jio has not only extended the deadline for Prime enrolment to April 15, but it also announced a new offer called Summer Surprise. It offers users with three months of complimentary services till June 30, and the usual tariff will be applicable starting July 1. The offer is applicable only for users who recharge with Rs 303 voucher and above.
