RIL chairman Mukesh Ambani today finally unveiled a date for the commercial launch of Reliance Jio, and not surprisingly, it has created quite a bit of buzz on the internet. Jio is launching on September 5, and with the tariff plans revealed today, we may be on the verge of witnessing a data war. But one of the announcements that could have been easily missed was when Ambani said that the JioFi router has seen a price drop to Rs 1,999 and from the launch price of Rs 2,899. The JioFi 2 device is a wireless router that can be used as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot to share internet with Wi-Fi enabled devices. The JioFi 2 device is only available to all the users for Rs 1,999. The JioFi 2 comes with tons of interesting features, and users can create a Wi-Fi hotspot and share the internet connection with up to 31 device. In comparison, most MiFi devices are capable of connecting only up to 10 devices at a time.
In terms of Wi-Fi, it supports 802.11b/g/n standards. While other MiFi devices offer speeds of up to 21Mbps, in our tests we were able to get speeds up to 27Mbps. The JioFi 2 is equipped with a 2,300mAh removable battery, which can offer up to eight hours of continuous use. Alongside the price drop, Ambani also announced Jio’s tariff plans at the AGM today. Reliance Jio will be offering only 10 plans priced between Rs 19 for a day to Rs 5,000 a month. Another key announcement was that Jio users will never have to pay for voice calls or messages ever, or for national roaming for that matter. Ambani also announced a welcome offer for new customers who will get unlimited access to JIo’s suite of apps till the end of this year. Reliance Jio s Preview Offer is already the talk of the town, and the company has added new smartphone brands to the list recently. Reliance Jio s preview offer is now compatible with over 200 smartphones. Apart from offering unlimited mobile data, HD voice calls, and messages, the preview offer also gives users access to Jio s suite of apps like JioPlay, JioOnDemand, JioBeats, JioXpressNews, JioSecurity, JioDrive, JioMags and JioMoney among others.
