Reliance Jio s competitive pricing has already disrupted the telecom sector. But it looks like the company is far from done. After a very dramatic run in the industry with its low priced 4G services, Reliance Jio is now reportedly venturing into the laptop segment. According to PhoneRadar, Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio could soon launch a laptop, and given the company s USP of the 4G service, the laptop will also come with a dedicated 4G SIM slot. Similar to how things work with the LYF-branded smartphones, which are essentially re-branded Chinese smartphones, the manufacturing of the laptops will also be outsourced. The rumored laptops will be manufactured by Foxconn for Infocus, which will then be sold in the country. Also Read - Arm-based notebook PC processor market could grow to $949 million in 2021
As for the design, the Jio laptop is speculated to take design inspiration from the 13.3-inch Apple MacBook. Therefore, if the reports are to be believed, the Jio laptop will come with a 13.3-inch FHD display, with an aspect ratio of 16:9. With 4G compatibility, it is also likely to have an HD camera for video calling. Going by the report, the Jio laptop will feature a chiclet key style slim keyboard sans the number pad. It is said to feature a magnesium alloy body without a cooling fan. The Jio laptop will measure 12.2mm in thickness, and weigh just 1.2 kilograms. Other than that, under the hood, the Jio laptop is likely to make use of an Intel Pentium quad-core processor along with 4GB of RAM, 128GB SSD storage and 64GB eMMC storage. For connectivity, apart from 4G LTE, the Jio laptop is expected feature Bluetooth 4.0, Micro HDMI port, two USB 3.0 ports, and a microSD card slot.
While a 4G laptop will be a first for India, it s not really a new thing. Last year in December, Xiaomi launched the Mi Notebook Air 4G laptop with 4G connectivity, which included Cat.4 4G LTE support capable of delivering download speeds up to 150Mbps. Xiaomi had tied up with China Mobile to offer 4GB data per month with the new laptop, so if the Jio laptop comes true, get ready for such offers.
