On December 28, 2015, Reliance Jio launched its 4G network services, limited to its employees, which was eventually rolled out for all users in September this year. At the time of commercial rollout, Reliance Jio launched a Welcome Offer , under which, all users get access to unlimited 4G data quota (with a daily cap of 4GB) along with unlimited voice calls to subscribers, till December 31. However, a new report by Business Insider, suggests that, on December 28 this year, Reliance Jio may extend the Welcome Offer for three more months. If the reports is in fact true, this would mean that users will now be able to avail the Welcome Offer till March 2017, as opposed to its earlier scheduled expiration on December 31. However, the report gives no clarity on how the validity will work for the new subscribers. Presumably, from what Reliance Jio announced recently, users subscribing to the network post December 3 will not be eligible for the Welcome Offer, if the news of extension is true, they may get the offer for the extended months. There was a lot of confusion created due to the discrepancy in the reported news about the expiration of the Welcome Offer, lately. But the telecom company soon clarified that, for the existing Jio customers, the service, as announced earlier, and will continue to be free, with unlimited voice and data offer available on their number till December 31. However, there was a change made in place, which affects those who subscribe to Jio services after December 3, 2016. New customers after the said date shifted to new data plans which the company will launch in future. Again, if the news of extension in the offer is true, this would work quite a bit in favor of the telecom company, attracting more users with the Welcome Offer. However, it would be interesting to see how Reliance Jio convinces other telecom operators and the telecom regulator of India, to offer the trail offer for an additional 90 days. While it will be difficult for Jio to continue to offer free services to consumers but Jio has also said in the past that it would not be fair to charge customer if the services are not up to the mark.
In addition to the rumor of extension of the Welcome Offer, the company is also planning to launch a new DTH service, dubbed JioTV, in the next month. The purported service is expected to go live on December 15 and is expected to be free of charge for the first six months of subscription. The Reliance JioTV service is rumored to be provided via GigaFibre broadband project which is based on the use of optical fibre technology. The service comes with 1 Gbps internet and a range of Jio VAS including 360 channels, which will include 50 channels in HD. Media reports have also hinted that the subscription package will come with a set-top-box along with an option to have an Android smartbox or Apple TV to help users control content and also play games. One needs to take this information with a pinch of salt as we are yet to hear any official announcement about JioTV.
