After months of repeated delays and intensive network testing, Reliance Jio has finally started its commercial operations across India from today. Ever since the announcement, Reliance Jio has been headlining for its disruptive pricing and offers, including free outgoing calls for life (local and national), unlimited SMS and 4G data at Rs 50 per GB, which is the cheapest in the world. As a part of Welcome Offer, Reliance Jio is offering potential customers with free SIM card and 90 days of unlimited 4G data, unlimited voice calls and SMS and unlimited access to Jio content services such as Live TV, on-demand movie streaming, online music streaming among others. If you want to avail these benefits of Reliance Jio s Welcome Offer but don t want to lose your existing number, you can opt for Mobile Number Portability (MNP) Also Read - Reliance JioFiber plans with free Voot Select subscription: Check plans, price, and other benefitsAlso Read - JioFiber broadband plans with free Netflix subscription: Check plans, price, data benefits, more
Mobile Number Portability lets you switch from your existing telecom operator to a new operator, without changing your number. So, whether your existing operator is Vodafone, Airtel, Idea Cellular, BSNL, MTNL or Aircel, you can port to Reliance Jio 4G or vice versa. Before you port, you should check compatibility of your smartphone to ensure you make most of Jio’s 4G and VoLTE services. If you head over to Reliance Jio website (jio.com), the company has mentioned a list of brands and their 4G compatible smartphones that will work on Jio s network. If your smartphone model is present in the list, you can go ahead and port. Other option is to buy a LYF-branded smartphone and port your existing number. The mobile number porting process is pretty simple here s how to go ahead with it. Also Read - How to get free Netflix subscription: Just follow these steps
How to port your mobile number to Reliance Jio
Step One: To begin with, you need to send an SMS from your existing mobile number. Head over to messaging, type PORT, space your 10-digit mobile number and send it to 1900. For instance, if your mobile number is 9820098200, the message will be — PORT 9820098200
Step Two: Upon sending the message, you will get a message from 1901 to verify the port out request. After a few hours, you will also receive a Unique Port Code (UPC), which is required for porting from one service provider to another. This UPC is valid for 15 days, so once you receive it, make sure that you port to the desired operator within 15 days, or you will have to generate the code once again. Step Three: On your compatible 4G smartphone, download MyJio app from the Play Store. Open the app and tap on Get Jio SIM option. Fill in your details, such as name, surname, alternate contact number, followed by city and state. Once this is done, a barcode with a number will be generated.
Step Four: Walk in to any of the Reliance Digital or Reliance Digital Xpress Mini stores with the unique porting code that you got from 1901, and the barcode generated from the MyJio app. Submit your documents — passport size photograph, aadhar card or voter ID card, address proof and you ll be given the Jio SIM card.
Do Note As everyone excited to get the Jio SIM card with preview offer, there would be long queues outside Reliance Digital stores. Some stores also have token system and timings (11AM-2PM) for giving the Jio SIM cards. We d recommend you to contact the Reliance Digital store and ask about the same before planning to go there with your documents. What do you get under the Reliance Jio 4G Welcome Offer
The Reliance Jio Welcome Offer is pretty different from the earlier Preview Offer. Yes, you do get unlimited HD voice calls and SMS, unlimited access to Jio suite of apps and unlimited 4G data till December 31 2016, but there s a catch. You get unlimited high speed 4G data, with a capping of 4GB per day. Once 4GB is consumed, the speed will drastically come down to 128Kbps. Also, while you get unlimited access to Jio apps, for Live TV, on-demand movies, online music streaming and more, the data consumed while streaming will be debited from the 4GB per day quota. But that is still not bad, considering 4GB per day, means you get 120GB per month, and 360GB until December 31, all for free of cost. What will happens post December 31?
After the Welcome Offer ends on December 31, you ll have to choose from the existing 10 tariff plans of Reliance Jio — ranging from Rs 149 for 28 days, and going all the way up to Rs 4,999. All plans give you unlimited HD voice calling, unlimited SMS (100 per day) and 4G data from 300MB to 75GB, depending on the plan you choose. If you exhaust your data allowance before the month end, there are top-up plans from Rs 151 to Rs 5,001, giving you mobile data from 1GB 4G + 1GB JioNet Wi-Fi, to 75GB 4G + 75GB JioNet Wi-Fi. Some plans also include JioNet Wi-Fi data allowance that could come into play when you are connected to public hotspot, which Reliance Jio plans to setup across India. Over and above that, Reliance Jio is also offering unlimited night 4G data (2AM to 5AM), but as of now there is no clarity on whether it will work on any downloads or only on Jio suite of apps. Relinace Jio is banking on affordable data plans, high-speed 4G LTE with VoLTE support for HD voice calling. The company also has app ecosystem for Live TV streaming, online music streaming, on-demand movies, cloud backup, mobile wallet and more. The company is also offering JioFi 2, a portable Wi-Fi hotspot for Rs 1,999. We have tried out Reliance Jio 4G services since the Preview Offer started a few months back, and we ve been impressed with the data download speeds. But, with Reliance Jio targeting 100 million subscribers and increasing number of subscribers getting added to the network every day, congestion is likely to happen. Also, a number of users have been reporting about call failures. So before you port your existing number, it would be better to hold on for a few months, let the network stabilize. Right now, getting an additional SIM card looks like a better deal rather than going for MNP.
