Even though Reliance Jio has been publicly available for only a little over two years now, the telecom services provider is already breaking records and taking over the market at a rapid pace. Last month, Jio overtook Vodafone to become the second-largest telecom operator in the country by subscribers. And now, according to a new report, Jio has a simple majority in market share when it comes to broadband services as well.
A report by Business Standard states that according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, Jio holds a 51 percent market share in all broadband internet services, comprising of both wired and wireless connections. While wireless connections are essentially the numbers provided by cellular users, Jio has also been adding wired users through its gradual roll-out of Jio Gigafiber, its fixed-line broadband internet service for home and office users.
Offering high-speed internet services direct to home, Jio Gigafiber opened up for registrations in mid-2018, with an expectation of delivering connections before the Diwali festive season. While progress has been slow, Jio has already started installing connections in various places and signing on subscribers. The company is also mulling an acquisition of Indian broadband services and cable TV provider Hathway, in order to strengthen and ease the roll-out.

Broadband services are regarded as all high-speed internet services, and the large chunk of these are in the form of wireless cellular services offered by key operators. While fixed-line services are still popular, the reducing costs of wireless high-speed internet are making users less reliant on fixed connections. Reliance Jio is followed by Bharti Airtel with a 21 percent market share through both its wireless and wired broadband services. Other players like Vodafone, Idea Cellular and state-owned operator BSNL make up almost the entirety of the rest of the segment.
