Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries announced the launch of JioGigaFiber at the 41st AGM of the company last week. JioGigaFiber is a fiber-based broadband service that marks Reliance Industries’ entry in the broadband sector. Reliance Jio Infocomm, the subsidiary of Reliance Industries that is responsible for bringing Reliance Jio to the market which took the Indian telecom industry by storm, is planning to launch GigaFiber in a staged manner. According to a report by The Economic Times, the company is planning to launch the fiber-based home broadband services in “15-20 key cities with high data demand”.

The company is working on rolling out the services from “early November” with “disruptive price plans in the Rs 500-700 per month range” while offering speeds of 100 Mbps up to 100GB data along with other additional services such as Jio GigaTV along with a set-top box. As pointed in the report, it is likely that the company may offer free services for some months in the beginning to rope in users similar to how it rolled out its telecom services.

However, the primary reason to have a staged rollout could be the challenges that the company will face when it comes to setting up “physical infrastructure” on the ground to provide the fiber-based services. This includes taking clearances from residents associations to offer “last-mile connectivity”.

The report also pointed out that the company will “prioritize its home broadband services roll-out to the localities which have the highest number of registrations.” This move makes sense for the company instead of focusing on localities where select people are interested in opting out for the service. Reliance has not revealed any official date of the rollout, the time frame for the rollout or the pricing of the service.
