Citing sources at the company, TeleAnalysis reports that Reliance Jio is not happy with the number of subscribers who have applied for the Prime membership. From a user base of over 100 million subscribers, only about 22-27 million have reportedly enrolled for the Prime membership. Nearly 50 percent lower than the target, Jio is clearly not happy with these numbers, and is said to be planning on extending the deadline by a month to give more users a chance to enroll for Prime. BGR India has reached out to Reliance Jio for a comment on this, and we will update the story once we hear from the company. Though Reliance Jio hasn t revealed any official numbers, the network operator clearly doesn t seem to be pleased with the numbers. A quick look at social media shows how existing subscribers are being bombarded with messages from Jio to apply for Prime. In some cases, users who have already enrolled for Prime continue to be spammed with these messages.
This report comes days after a survey by Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, which claimed that nearly 85 percent of existing Jio subscribers were willing to stick with the operator once the freebies came to an end on March 31. To enroll for Prime, an existing subscriber has to pay a one-time fee of Rs 99, and then a monthly tariff of Rs 303. This would allow users to continue reaping the benefits of Jio s services at a cost that comes up to Rs 10 per day.
As a part of the Happy New Year offer, Jio users were able to enjoy all the benefits of the previous Welcome Offer. These included unlimited free voice calls, SMS messages, and free access to Jio s suite of apps. Users also got unlimited 4G data, which was capped to 1GB per day.
