Reliance Jio has topped the speed chart yet again with a score of 19.12 megabit per second (Mbps) in April. This result comes from MySpeed app of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), which calculates mobile data speeds of telecom operators in real time. Reliance Jio’s 4G speed has increased compared to March, which saw average speeds of 18.487Mbps. April’s speed result for Jio’s 4G network is notable since the telco started its paid services last month. Leading the 4G speed meter for April, this marks the fourth consecutive month for Jio with the highest 4G speed. Jio’s triumphic run began in January this year with 17.43Mbps, moving on to 16.49Mbps in February and 18.49Mbps in March. As for other networks, Idea Cellular came second with 13.70Mbps, Vodafone followed with 13.38Mbps and Airtel stood fourth with 10.15Mbps. Ever since Jio made its entry to the telecom market, the country has seen the worst of telecom wars which continue till date. Jio’s free services started the long struggle of incumbent players either fighting against the former or slashing their data rates.
Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular, the top three telcos against Jio, started offering 4G data at affordable rates to please their customers and at the same time give competition to Jio. Although, Jio started its paid services last month, the prepaid and postpaid plans are still quite affordable when compared to current rates. The current rise in Jio’s 4G speed for the month of April could be a result of the drop of active users due to the paid services. While Jio enjoys the throne right now, its ground could seem shaky in the months to come as some major changes in the telecom environment are expected. To start with, Vodafone and Idea Cellular had recently announced a merger to become the country’s largest entity worth more than $23 billion comprising a 35 percent market share. The Vodafone-Idea merger is expected to bring some considerable changes to the table. ALSO READ: Reliance Jio Fiber to offer 100GB data for Rs 500 in 100 cities by Diwali: Report
