Reliance Jio remains top feature phone brand in India with nearly half the market share: Counterpoint

Reliance Jio is estimated to have sold over 25 million units of JioPhone since launch last year.

Reliance Jio has captured almost half of the total feature phone market in the country. The company has been growing at a strong pace in the feature phone market since the launch of JioPhone last year. Now, Counterpoint Research says Reliance Jio has a market share of 47 percent in India’s feature phone market. At the end of second quarter of 2018, Reliance Jio held the highest market share ever in the feature phone segment. The research firm notes that the feature phone market is outpacing the growth of smartphone market with a 21 percent year-on-year growth. Reliance Jio is likely to maintain the growth momentum, and even has a chance of further strengthening its position in the market. At the annual general meeting held early this month, Reliance Jio announced a refreshed variant of JioPhone, aggressive new exchange offer, and availability of popular apps like WhatsApp and YouTube. At the end of second quarter of 2017, Reliance Jio had a market share of only 0.3 percent, and it now controls nearly half the market due to strong response for the JioPhone. In the feature phone segment, Samsung holds the second place with a market share of nine percent, which is a decline from 27 percent market share in the previous year. Nokia took third place with jump in its market share from three percent in Q2 2017 to eight percent at the end of Q2 2018.

Transsion Holdings sub-brand iTel and home-grown mobile manufacturer Lava saw their market share plummet during the second quarter. iTel’s market share declined from 16 percent during second quarter of 2017 to six percent at the end of last quarter. Lava also sees its market share decline from eight percent a year ago to five percent. The top five brands now control 75 percent of the feature phone market with one clear leader.

Reliance Jio launched JioPhone as a smart feature phone last year. The feature phone runs KaiOS, and supports modern apps like Google Assistant, WhatsApp, Facebook, Google Maps and YouTube. Since its launch, Reliance Jio is estimated to have sold over 25 million units, and plans to increase the user base to around 100 million over the next one year.

In order to increase sales, Reliance Jio announced JioPhone Monsoon Hungama Offer, where customers can exchange their working feature phone for a new JioPhone at just Rs 501. The deal also comes with a tailored tariff plan that offers unlimited data, voice calls and access to Jio apps. The company will also commence sales of JioPhone 2 next month that offers a wider display and full QWERTY keypad for a seamless typing experience.
