Reliance Jio was always expected to revolutionize the current Indian mobile space, and it has just done that. At the ongoing Reliance Industries (RIL) annual general meeting (AGM), chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani has announced that voice calls for every Jio user will be free. There won’t be any costs applicable for calls ever, and there won’t be any roaming charges either.
Ambani started off by saying that one of the important principles of Jio is that customers should ‘only pay for one service’. That would either be voice or data, and in the case of Jio, it will be data. Ambani said that Jio users will never have to pay for voice calls, and instead only have to pay a minimal rate for using data. Comparing with the existing standards, where users have to pay at least 65p per minute for voice calls, it will be free on Jio. As for data, the average rate is Rs 250 for 1GB, while in Jio’s case it will be as low as Rs 50 for 1GB. These rates are in line with Ambani’s vision to transform India from ‘high data rate market to among the lowest tariff market’.
Another talking point about Ambani’s announcement today is the absence of any sort of roaming charges in India. In the spirit of One India, roaming charges will also be zero across India.
