Earlier this year in July, Reliance Jio announced WhatsApp, YouTube and Facebook apps for the JioPhone and JioPhone 2. The announcement was made at Reliance AGM, where the company also revealed that JioPhone has 25 million users across India. Now, while the YouTube and Facebook apps already made their way to the smart feature phones, rollout of WhatsApp was delayed for some reason. The announcement was made by Reliance Jio on Twitter. To download WhatsApp, head over to JioStore on your JioPhone or JioPhone 2, and you will see it in the list. Just click on install, and the app will be downloaded and installed in a few seconds. In order to use the app, you will also need to update the JioPhone software which can be done by heading over to Settings > Device > Software Update. We downloaded WhatsApp on our JioPhone and gave it a try. To setup, you need to enter your Jio number, after which you will receive an OTP. Enter this OTP to authenticate, and your WhatsApp account will be up and running. In case you are wondering if it is locked to a particular phone number and IMEI, that s not the case. You can use any Jio SIM card on the JioPhone to use WhatsApp.
You get basic features like the ability to chat with users via text, send and receive photos and videos. However, if you expected a full-fledged version like Android or iOS, you may be a little disappointed. WhatsApp on KaiOS has some limitations you won t be able to make voice and video calls, you cannot set a status or check photo status.
Also, there is no location sharing option, nor the app gives any ability to backup the chats. But it being a feature phone, the app is just here to allow you get in touch with others who are present on WhatsApp platform.
