Last month, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) unveiled JioPhone 2, the next version of its ultra-affordable (read: effectively free) smart feature phone. A little over a month after its announcement at RIL’s 41st Annual General Meeting (AGM), the JioPhone 2 is one step closer to reaching into the hands of consumers. The phone is the successor to the JioPhone, which was launched last year and has since risen to the top of the feature phone and fusion phone segments in India.
Pre-orders for the JioPhone 2 are set to commence from August 15, 2018. Interested customers can head over to Jio’s website or MyJio app, click on “Get Now” on the JioPhone 2’s offer page, and pay for the phone. Those who successfully pre-order the phone will have it delivered to them in a few days after the sale goes live. Worth pointing out is that the more affordable JioPhone also remains on sale, and is not being replaced by the JioPhone 2.
Having a price tag of Rs 2,999, the JioPhone 2 is a solid upgrade over its predecessor. The phone features a full QWERTY keypad, along with a 2.4-inch QVGA display. In terms of hardware, the new JioPhone 2 is mostly the same as the original Jio Phone. It comes with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage, and there’s also a memory expansion slot that can accept microSD cards of up to 128GB. For imaging, JioPhone 2 has a 2-megapixel rear camera and a 0.3-megapixel front-facing snapper. The whole package is backed by a 2,000mAh battery.

Connectivity features on the JioPhone 2 include dual-SIM functionality, VoLTE, VoWi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. The smartphone runs KaiOS and will eventually get popular apps such as Facebook, YouTube, and WhatsApp. All these apps will be available on the original Jio Phone as well.
