At its 41st AGM last week, Reliance Jio introduced the JioPhone 2 with a QWERTY keypad and a wide-screen display for Rs 2,999. Jio also announced that popular apps like WhatsApp, YouTube, and Facebook are coming to the JioPhone platform. Now, the telecom operator has rolled out an update that brings Google Maps support for the JioPhone, and it will also be available for the JioPhone 2 as well, when it launches.
Spotted by Mumbai-based retailer Mahesh Telecom, the version of Google Maps is specifically built for KaiOS that powers the JioPhones. To download Google Maps, you will first have to update the software to the latest version. You can do this by going to Settings -> Device -> Software Update. Once that is done, open JioStore app, and you will see the list of apps that are available to download.
In the JioStore, just click on Google Maps, followed by install. Once the app is installed, click on Open and you will see shortcuts on the screen. However, as the app is designed for a feature phone, it just offers basic functionality. Still, you can search for a place, get the map view, look for your location, and more. You can also look for the route from source to destination, look for public transport options such as bus, train, metro and more.

Smartphone sales have been soaring, but in India, there is a market for feature phones too, and JioPhone is the best example. Reliance Jio also highlighted the fact that it has reached a milestone of 215 million users, and JioPhone now has 25 million users in India. JioPhone platform also supports Google Assistant allowing you to make voice searches from the feature phone.
The Nokia 8110 4G that HMD Global announced at MWC 2018 also runs on KaiOS, and there are high chances that apps like WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube and Google Assistant will likely get ported to that device going forward.
