After much anticipation and leaks floating around for over months, Reliance Jio finally made the JioPhone official today at the Reliance Industries Limited’s (RIL) 40th annual general meeting. With the JioPhone, Reliance Jio targets the 50 million feature phone users in India who are seemingly unaware of the affordable 4G VoLTE services at their disposal. The feature phone will be exclusively available to select users in its beta phase starting August 15, Independence Day. The company will open pre-bookings for the handset around a week later on August 24. The company will be putting up 5 million JioPhones every week for sale following the pre-bookings. To buy JioPhone, users need to make a deposit of Rs 1,500 to Reliance Jio which will be refunded after 3 years. So, this makes the JioPhone purchase ‘effectively free’ for all. The company also announced independent tariff plans for the JioPhone. For one thing, voice calls will continue to remain free for JioPhone users with unlimited access to data, as promised by Reliance Jio. The feature phone or the dumb phone, as millennials call is completely manufactured in India. It features a 2.4-inch QVGA display and for in-device navigation, it has D-pad and alphanumeric keypad. The handset also has FM radio compatibility and comes with essential support for SD card and LED flashlight.
The JioPhone also comes bundled with a slew of MyJio apps and an additional cable which will enable users to connect their feature phone with TV or other smart display monitors. Furthermore, the handset also features an emergency call or the SOS function, placed by long pressing ‘5’ on the alphanumeric keypad. IT also supports voice control for users to perform simple tasks such as placing calls or send text messages with just voice commands. The voice control comes with support for English and Hindi language.
