As per LiveMint, Jio is now creating ties with a vendor in Chennai to manufacture the JioPhone locally. At the China facility, Jio had apparently started to fall short of production capacity being offered. The initial batch of 6 million devices were produced in China.
“In the second phase, we have received expressions of interest for 10 million devices and have already started manufacturing in Chennai,” LiveMint reported a person related to the matter as saying. The person also said that Jio is reaching out to prospective buyers through text messages wherein they are asked to make a payment of Rs 1,500 to collect their devices.
Back in July, Ambani had said production of Jio phones in India would start in the last quarter of the year, promising his contribution to Make in India. However, due to reported capacity constraints that Jio faced in China, the company may end up missing its sale targets.
“The manufacturing capacity in China is 300,000-400,000 devices per day maximum. The fulfilment team responsible to get the devices manufactured has not been able to deliver. The target to achieve sales of 200 million phones by December 2018 seems unlikely,” this person told the publication.
