Reliance JioPhone is being used by 25 million people in India. At the ongoing annual general meeting, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani announced that there are now 25 million users of JioPhone in the country. The number shows the demand for company’s smart feature phone has been growing rapidly since its launch last year. Reliance Jio claims to have over 215 million subscribers on its 4G-only network. The company announced JioPhone as a smart feature aimed at the tier 2 and tier 3 cities in the country. At the launch, Reliance Jio said there are over 500 million feature users who are deprived of access to faster networks like 3G and 4G and with JioPhone, the company announced its plan to upgrade those customers to faster 4G network. In order to improve the overall user experience, Reliance JioPhone is getting support for Facebook, YouTube and WhatsApp. Since the launch of JioPhone last year, there have been request for WhatsApp, one of the world’s most popular messaging application. Facebook, the parent company of WhatsApp, was one of the first major developers to sign up with its apps on JioPhone.
The social media giant first brought Facebook to JioPhone and now it has brought WhatsApp as well. With WhatsApp on JioPhone, the smart feature phone has gotten even closer to being called as the real smartphone. There is also suppport for YouTube, the world’s largest video platform.
Reliance Jio also announced JioPhone 2, the second version of the device with wider display and support for full QWERTY keyboard. The experience on JioPhone and JioPhone 2 is being powered by KaiOS, the smart feature phone operating that offers smart features like digital assistant including Google Assistant. The company behind KaiOS recently received $22 million in funding from Google and is now expected to get support for Google Maps as well.

Counterpoint Research had recently crowned Reliance Jio as the largest brand in the feature phone segment. With the arrival of YouTube, Facebook and WhatsApp on August 15, the feature phone will become even more lucrative to potential feature phone buyers. The Reliance JioPhone, also dubbed as India ka Smartphone, is priced at Rs 1,500 and is available at refundable deposit that brings the effective price down to zero.
