Reliance Jio’s average peak speed 13 times faster than daily 4G speed: Report

Average peak speed is designed to measure speed when the network is performing optimally.

Since Reliance Jio entered the league of network providers, the real competition between the carriers became visible. Now more than ever, people started to aggressively draw comparisons between the services being offered to us. Suddenly people are more concerned than ever about the network speeds they get. And amid all of this sprouted the battle between Airtel and Reliance Jio, both of whom blame each other for creating a monopoly in the market and faking their internet speeds, respectively. And now in the middle of the rivalry, OpenSignal has shared some new statistics regarding network speed that are sure to make things more interesting. Before we discuss the statistics, to get a little perspective about what the research is, here is a scenario. A network operator proclaims connection speeds of between 300 Mbps and 800 Mbps. However, when you use these networks as a consumer, all you wonder is how a 300 Mbps network delivers just 25 Mbps in data speeds. That s the tricky thing about cellular technologies. Mobile capacity is by definition shared capacity. Even if a mobile technology is theoretically capable of supporting speeds of 300 Mbps, that capacity has to be shared by every other user connected to a particular tower or cell in the network, so those 300 megabits get divided up among multiple devices, explains OpenSignal. Therefore, the research firm is experimenting with a new metric called average peak speed, which as the name suggests, is designed to measure speed when the network is performing optimally. It’s designed to measure the optimized 4G experience consumers see when the network is performing at its full capacity, as opposed to the typical everyday experience which is often limited by network congestion and other technical factors. They used the new metric to calculate optimal speeds for the four major LTE providers in India – Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular. Calculating average peak speed from December 2016 to February 2017, OpenSignal found that Airtel s average peak speed test was 56.6 Mbps, which is 5 times faster than its average 4G download test of 11.5 Mbps. Reliance Jio, on the other hand, had the slowest 4G speeds according to OpenSignal s previous reports. However, in its peak speed comparison Jio s average connection was second only to Airtel. Jio s average peak speed was recorded at 50 Mbps, which is nearly 13 times faster than its everyday 4G speed download speed of 3.9 Mbps. Meanwhile, both Vodafone and Idea peak speed measurements are about 4 times faster than their 4G measurements. While that certainly makes things interesting for Reliance Jio, but the inevitable question this data raises is that why are Jio s peaks so much higher than its average. The research firm blames network congestion. Clearly Jio s networks are capable of supporting some incredibly fast LTE connections when conditions are ideal. But what our data reveals is that those ideal conditions were far more rare for Jio subscribers than for customers of the other operators, writes OpenSignal. Jio has grown phenomenally since its launch in September 2016. Soon after, it signed up more than 100 million subscribers, and for most of that period Jio was offering those customers nearly unlimited access to mobile data. That kind of heavy usage is bound to tax any network, forcing users to vie against one another for bandwidth. Our data shows that Jio s slow average 4G speeds aren t a technical limitation, but rather a capacity bottleneck. As Jio adds more capacity either through new spectrum or building more cell sites or as Jio s mobile data consumption levels drop, then its typical download speeds should increase. OpenSignal also explains why there have been a discrepancy in the speed test results by them, Ookla or TRAI s MySpeed app. It says that TRAI has measured the fastest 4G speeds on Jio s networks for the past six months, meanwhile OpenSignal s results, along with measurements conducted by other Ookla found Jio s average LTE speeds to be much slower. The reason it explains comes from TRAI s methodology. TRAI is measuring operator performance under ideal conditions, while OpenSignal s methodology tests the typical everyday experience of consumers. As our average peak speed metric shows, there s a huge difference between Jio s everyday speeds and its optimal speeds. ALSO READ: Airtel rated the Fastest Mobile Network for 2016 by Ookla
