RIM’s new CEO, Thorsten Heis, did his first conference call today where he tried to emphasize nothing majorly wrong in the company and “you hit a few bumps here and there but you need to learn from them.” Heis, who has been with RIM since 2007 said that he doesn’t see a need for drastic change. “We need to get better at process discipline. Earlier, we used to innovate while developing products. That needs to stop. We need to stop innovating on defined products and execute precisely,” he said during the call. Heis is also quite enthusiastic of BlackBerry 10 and the QNX acquisition RIM did around 18 months ago. He called QNX a competing platform rather than one playing catchup with iOS and Android. On licensing, Heis said he would listen to other companies’ request for licensing but that won’t be his core focus. “I will not separate or split RIM up into different units. In case any company wants to license BlackBerry 10, I will listen to them,” he said, laying to rest speculation for the time being whether RIM will survive as a smartphone company. Heis considers better marketing and go to market plans as a priority for RIM at the moment, which is also searching for a chief marketing officer. With BlackBerry 10 delayed till later this year, RIM will have to do a lot to maintain their market share, leave aside growing it. It is going to be a tough road ahead for Heis, who some analysts believe is sort of an interim CEO than a long-term appointment.
