Sacred Games, the Netflix TV series based on novel by Vikram Chandra with the same name, released globally on July 6. The eight episode TV series directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap of Phantom films, is the first original Netflix series to come from India.

While Sacred Games has received rave reviews from critics and has turned into talking point in the country, the TV series has found itself locked in fresh controversy. A member of Indian National Congress from West Bengal has lodged a complaint against Netflix, actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and the producers of Sacred Games for ‘insulting’ late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

According to the complaint filed on Tuesday, Rajeev Sinha, a member of West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee, alleges that “Sacred Games has a scene in which the protagonist Nawazuddin Siddiqui is seen abusing late Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi by calling him Fattu.” The complaint adds that the word is translated to ‘Pu###’ in the English subtitle of the show. Sinha also alleges the creators of Sacred Games to have misrepresented facts during Rajiv Gandhi’s period as prime minister.

The complaint also states that the series “also crosses all limits of decency,” likely referring to nudity and sex scenes in the series. “Sacred Games has taken Indian Film Industry to a new low,” writes Sinha in his complaint.

The show is filled with violence and offers commentary on political and religious events. The show reflects back on India’s political history including Gandhi’s alleged role in the Bofors scam, and his involvement in the Shah Bano case. The US-based OTT platform describes the show as a dark thriller series, and it justifies the description with strong scenes of violence.

The complaint has been accepted by Girish Park police station, but there is no clarity on whether the claims have been verified. It is also not clear whether any action would be taken against the video streaming platform, and Netflix has not offered any official comment.
