British chip designer ARM Holdings recently unveiled the Cortex A76 CPU alongside the Mali-G76 GPU and Mali-V76 VPU for next-gen smartphones. Now, Samsung has announced that it is partnering ARM to manufacture the Cortex A76 CPU. The South Korean giant also announced on its Foundry Forum 2018 that SoC based on 7nm LPP and 5nm LPE processes will have clock speeds over 3GHz. The high clock speed and process size will make the CPUs fast enough to beat the modern 10nm chips with similar configurations. However, it may take a while before consumers get their hands on the new high-powered ARM CPUs. The process will boast the first ever “extreme ultra violet (EUV) lithography process technology”, Samsung said. The tech will allow for ultra-low power benefits and greater area scaling, thanks to the latest innovations in the 7LPP process. Collaboration with Arm in the fields of IP solutions is crucial to increase high-performance computing power and accelerate the growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning capabilities, Ryan Sanghyun Lee, vice president of Foundry Marketing Team at Samsung Electronics said in a forum post. Samsung also announced that the 7LPP process technology will be ready for initial production sometime in the second half of 2018.
Samsung s Extreme Ultra Violet (EUV) lithography process is likely to be completed in the first half of 2019. The process will enable 5nm SoCs to be smaller and more energy efficient compared to their 7nm counterparts. And after 7LPP, the 5LPE tech will allow for ultra-low power and greater area scaling capabilities.
