Over the weekend, Samsung started teasing the launch of the Gear S3 smartwatch, and now the company has made things official. Samsung has put up a teaser of sorts on its Twitter account that reveals the date of unveiling as August 31 at a pre-IFA 2016 event. The event is scheduled to kick off at 6:00PM CEST or 9:30PM IST, and Samsung will be live streaming the event on its website. As the name suggests, the Gear S3 smartwatch will be the successor to the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic smartwatches that were unveiled exactly a year back. These smartwatches featured a circular design with an intuitive rotating bezel to navigate through the UI, and a pair of physical buttons on sides that could be used to go back or select. While details are scarce at the moment, Samsung is widely expected to retain the circular design as well as the rotating bezels. That said, the company will be adding new sensors onboard like an altimeter, barometer, speedometer and even a GPS. A GPS onboard the smartwatch will enable it to track the user’s location and movement without the need to be connected to the smartphone all the time. The barometer, on the other hand, will alert users if the pressure is dropping too fast and could also indicate storm warning.
On the software front, the smartwatches are expected to run on Samsung’s own Tizen OS. Though prices are not known at the moment, reports claim they will not be too far from their predecessors. The Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic were launched in India earlier this year, priced at Rs 24,300 and Rs 25,800 respectively.
