Samsung confirms working on a Bixby-powered smart speaker, to launch 'soon'

Samsung's smart speaker is expected to be powered by its AI assistant, Bixby.


Reports around Samsung working on a smart speaker have been circulating for the past few months. It was reported that Samsung is working on a smart speaker that will be powered by its AI assistant, Bixby. The project is codenamed Vega, and is believed to be still in its early stages of development. Samsung has now said that it is indeed working on a smart speaker, and the device will be launched soon. At the launch event of the Galaxy Note 8, DJ Koh, the president of Samsung s mobile division confirmed this in an interview with CNBC. Koh was quoted as saying, Maybe soon we will announce it. I am already working on it. As I mentioned I wanted to provide a fruitful user experience at home with Samsung devices, and I want to be moving quite heavily on it.

Details on its features and specifications were however not mentioned. Nonetheless, this states that Samsung would be joining the emerging line of smart speakers with Amazon, Google and newbie Apple. Smart speakers first entered the commercial market with the Amazon Echo, followed by the Google Home. This year saw a sudden influx with Apple s HomePod, Andy Rubin s Essential Home , and Cortana-powered Invoke. Samsung with its smart speaker would be joining upcoming hopefuls like HP Inc and Intel. According to a report by Korea Herald, Samsung s plan for smart devices is pretty big as it aims to connect all home appliances by 2020. Samsung hopes to provide a dedicated control platform for all its connected devices. Samsung is also set to unveil new smart home services at the upcoming IFA 2017 in Berlin. As for Samsung s smart speaker, the development could still take some as its AI assistant, Bixby still lacks full functionalities. Bixby Voice was first available in South Korea and the US, with a global rollout started just yesterday. The English language voice command for Bixby took three months for it to be user available. Also, Bixby is available in Korean and US English languages only. Samsung says that more languages, and support for devices and third-party apps will be added soon. The Galaxy Note 8 also became the second smartphone to come with Bixby, and a dedicated button as well. Samsung s smart assistant development is going rather slow but could soon catch up this year, giving more on the possibility of its smart speaker launching soon .
