According to the latest IDC report, smartphone vendors in India shipped 23.3 million smartphones during the third quarter of this year. As for the companies themselves, South Korean giant Samsung continued its dominance in the Indian smartphone market followed closely by Micromax. The number of smartphones shipped in the third quarter, is a 27 percent increase quarter-on-quarter, and a whopping 82 percent year-on-year growth. The share of smartphone market in the overall mobile phone market stood at 32 percent in the third quarter of 2014, which is a considerable growth over 19 percent in the same period a year ago. “The Indian smartphone market outshone other emerging markets in the Asia Pacific region in terms of quarter-over- quarter growth,” IDC said in a statement. “This is the second consecutive quarter of more than 80 per cent year-on-year growth for smartphones, reflecting robust end-user demand.” Also Read - Galaxy A22 replaces M42 5G to become the cheapest 5G Samsung phone in India
As mentioned above, Samsung continued to dominate the smartphone market with a 24 percent market share, while Micromax followed with a 20 percent market share. These two companies were followed by Karbonn and Lava, both with an eight percent market share, and Motorola with a five percent market share.
“Smartphone with screen size between 4.5-inch and 5.5-inch are seen as the sweet spot for consumer preference. Consumer need higher screen size phone to enjoy media content and with the 4G rollout expected in CY2015, we expect Phablets segment to pick up again” Kiran Kumar, Research ManagerClient Devices IDC India said.
As far as the overall mobile market is concerned, it grew nine percent to 72.5 million units in the said quarter, while it was higher by 15 percent quarter-on-quarter. The feature phone market however declined nine percent year-on-year to 49.2 million units, but was higher by 10 percent when compared to the April-June 2014 quarter.
Samsung again continued to dominate in the overall mobile market as well, with a 16 percent share, followed closely by Micromax with a 14 percent share, Nokia 11 percent, Lava 10 percent and Karbonn at eight percent.
