Samsung might have realized that Bixby needs help going forward from AI leaders like Google. At the ongoing IFA 2018, Samsung CEO Kim Hyun-suk shared views about company’s progress in artificial intelligence and digital voice assistant Bixby. During a press conference, Hyun-suk said that Samsung ‘could consider’ several forms of collaboration with Google on AI to help augment its Bixby voice assistant. Samsung is developing its own voice assistant, Bixby, but we could consider various (forms) of collaboration with Google in the field. For example, we would call up Bixby, but it could lead us to one of Google s services, like Google Map, said Kim Hyun-suk, Samsung s president and CEO of consumer electronics at a press conference (via The Korea Herald).

When media asked about the possibility of Google Assistant into Samsung’s home appliances in future, Hyun-suk suggested that Samsung could use bargaining power to get Google more on board with Bixby, since the company has dominance in smartphone market.

Each company has areas they particularly excel in, and collaboration is essential for perfect voice control, Kim said. Samsung is a company that sells around 500 million units of devices worldwide every year, and we can use this as our bargaining power to negotiate the level of cooperation with AI leaders like Google.

Hyun-suk, who also heads Samsung Research, thinks that Samsung is capable enough to make any kind of hardware product with robotic advancement which AI leaders like Google lack, although voice is going to be a very crucial point of interaction.
