Samsung is expected to unveil its foldable smartphone next month at its developer conference in San Francisco. The device will showcase its foldable display system and it seems, Samsung is also working on foldable devices bigger than smartphones. Samsung VP for PC division has confirmed that the Korean giant is working on laptops with foldable displays.
“Like foldable smartphones, Samsung is collaborating with display makers to develop laptops with foldable displays that will not just simply fold in and out but create new value and user experience, amid the changing market trends for laptops,” said Lee Min-Cheol, Vice President – Marketing for PCs at Samsung. The confirmation from Min-Cheol came during a laptop event in South Korea held early this week.
Samsung is already the leader in OLED display solution and the industry has been looking at the company for evolution of next form of display technology. Foldable display is seen as natural evolution for 2-in-1 devices made popular by Microsoft and Intel. The current bread of 2-in-1 devices from Microsoft, Lenovo, HP, Dell and others flip and rotate into modes such as tablet and studio.
The use of a foldable display will allow these PC makers to be more creative with the form factor. Samsung has not revealed which companies it is working for the foldable display solution or has it shared a date for the launch of such a form factor. At Samsung Developer Conference next month, the company is expected to show these display tech to developers for the first time.
Lee also revealed that Samsung sells around 3.2 million PCs each year, according to The Korea Herald and he says that these devices “play a centric role among IT products in increasing connectivity with other mobile devices.” However, Samsung is not the main player in the PC business. HP, Lenovo, Dell, Apple and Acer are the leaders.

Samsung recently launched the Galaxy Book 2 as its rival to Surface Pro 6 and it would be an ideal candidate to get foldable display. We will need to wait and see what Samsung does with foldable displays but it definitely has the opportunity to make such form factor mainstream among other vendors.
