Samsung is expected to showcase its first foldable smartphone at its annual developer conference being held in San Francisco between November 7 and 8. DJ Koh, President of Samsung’s mobile division, has already confirmed that the company is working on a foldable smartphone, and will share more details at the developer conference. Now, a report from Korea’s The Bell has revealed specifications of the foldable device.
The report reiterates that Samsung’s foldable smartphone will feature dual OLED displays. This allows for the flexibility to be used as a smartphone when folded or as a tablet when unfolded. A previous report claimed that Samsung’s first foldable smartphone is codenamed ‘Winner’.
Samsung Foldable Phone: Specifications and Availability
It is clear that Samsung’s first foldable smartphone will include two Super AMOLED displays and the display is said to measure 7.29-inches diagonally. The secondary display will measure 4.58-inches, claims the report and Samsung is planning to market the device to feature a 7.3-inch and 4.6-inch displays, respectively. When folded, the Galaxy Winner will work like a regular smartphone and when unfolded, it can be used like a tablet with a larger 7.3-inch canvas.
It is not clear why Samsung is advertising it as dual display when we are looking at one single display that can be folded. Samsung Display will be the manufacturer of the foldable display that Samsung plans to use here, and the initial volume will be limited to 100,000 a month. Samsung Display is said to be planning to make around 500,000 to 1 million units of foldable display per year.
In order to ensure durability of its foldable smartphone, Samsung is reportedly using a hinge developed by a Korean company named KH Vatec. When folded, the KH Vatec hinge will ensure there is a small space between the two panels and it will also allow users to fold out the main display at various angles. We will know more details about Samsung’s first foldable smartphone at the Developer Conference later this week.
