A couple of weeks back, it was reported that Samsung’s mid-range smartphones may also get ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanners in 2019, which was earlier expected to feature on anticipated flagship Galaxy S series only. The smartphone maker had made a deal with Qualcomm for the sensors, but now according to a new report, Samsung might be looking at another supplier for the optical in-display fingerprint scanner as well.

A report coming out of South Korea’s ETnews claims that Samsung has finalized Taiwanese company Aegis Technology as the supplier of these in-display sensors, which will be included in relatively more affordable Galaxy A-Series of smartphones. It notes that Aegis will be making optical sensors for the phones, instead of the ultrasonic sensors like Qualcomm.

In comparison, the ultrasonic sensors are much more accurate than the optical ones. Samsung is looking to incorporate these ultrasonic sensors in the upcoming Galaxy S10. Samsung will be using the advanced version of sensor which covers as much as a third of a display. This is also reported that Samsung might keep the technology exclusive until the first half of 2019.

For the optical in-display fingerprint scanners, Samsung is not the only one going for this technology. Some of the popular Android smartphones like Vivo V11 Pro, Huawei Mate 20 Pro and OnePlus 6T already use it with array of LEDs to flash a light on the fingerprint.

The latest report also notes Aegis Technology wasn’t the only one competing for the Samsung orders, another company MediaTek’s Goodix was also part of the tender. Citing unnamed industry sources, the report claims Samsung preferred Aegis Technology’s in-display fingerprint scanner and these are likely to feature in the Galaxy A-Series in 2019.
