In India, Chinese brands dominate the upper mid-range segment with smartphones priced in the Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 bracket. Most smartphones offer top-of-the-line hardware at an aggressive price, and these include the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2, OnePlus 5T and Honor View10, to name a few. Samsung, with is new Galaxy A8+ (2018), is taking on these Chinese smartphone makers.

The new Samsung Galaxy A8+ (2018) is priced at Rs 32,990 and will be available exclusively via Amazon India, starting January 20. The smartphone borrows its design cues from the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 series, along with other interesting features that give it an edge over the competition. At the launch event, I got to play with the smartphone, and here are my first impressions.

Design that mimics Samsung s flagships

The metal frame sandwiched between the front and back glass has earned some rave reviews for Samsung, and the company is trying the same with its new Galaxy A8+ (2018) smartphone. Up front, you get a 6-inch Full HD+ display with 18.5:9 aspect ratio. Above the display, you have the earpiece and dual cameras, which I will talk about in a bit.

Learning from user feedback with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8, the fingerprint sensor at the back is now placed right below the camera module. Besides the camera, you have an LED flash too, and rest of the back is clear.

Up top, you have a microSIM and microSD card slot, while the power button and speaker grill is placed on the right. On the left, you have the volume rocker and a microSIM card slot, while the bottom houses a USB Type-C port and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Samsung Galaxy A8+ (2018) cameras

The highlight of the smartphone is the dual front facing camera setup one is an 8-megapixel depth sensor, and other is a 16-megapixel sensor for clicking photos and recording videos. Both cameras have an aperture of f/1.9 and they let you add DSLR-like bokeh effects to your photos. At the back, you have a 16-megapixel sensor of aperture f/1.7 for better low-light photography.

In the time that I got to play around with the smartphone, the camera quality looked pretty interesting, and I will be testing more in the coming days when I review the smartphone. Here are some of the camera samples that I took. One is a low-light selfie, which may not be too sharp, but even with little lighting, it is doing a decent job. However, I couldn t help notice that the selfies look a little overexposed.

Samsung Galaxy A8+ (2018) specifications and features

Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by an Exynos 7885 octa-core SoC paired with 6GB of RAM and 64GB onboard storage. On the connectivity front, the smartphone comes with dual SIM card slots, 4G LTE with VoLTE HD voice calling support, GPS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

The smartphone is also IP68 certified for water and dust resistance meaning you can submerge it under 1.5-meter water for up to 30 minutes. You also get Samsung Pay support with MST technology to tap-and-pay using your credit or debit card, without actually swiping one. Samsung Pay also integrates utility bill payment options and mobile wallets such as Paytm and Mobikwik.

What s more, besides the fingerprint sensor for biometric authentication, the smartphone also comes with a facial recognition feature. I haven’t had a chance to test it, but we’ll talk about it in detail when we review the smartphone. Lastly, the smartphone also comes integrated with Bixby, Samsung s voice assistant, and always on display.

Final thoughts

In the little time that I used the smartphone, I am impressed with what Samsung has on offer, as well as its aggressive pricing. Features like water and dust resistance, Samsung Pay, dual front cameras and front and back glass makes the Galaxy A8+ (2018) an interesting option in this price range. We will be putting the smartphone through the paces in the coming weeks and come up with our review soon. So stay tuned for that.
