Samsung’s top-of-the-line Galaxy Note 9 smartphone (or phablet, if that’s what you prefer), which the chaebol unveiled earlier this month at an event in New York, is landing in India soon. However, it’s not the only smartphone that Samsung is planning to bring to Indian shores.
A full-blown teaser page has gone live on Amazon India, signalling the impending arrival of a new Samsung smartphone. With the words “Here comes the star!” strewn across the teaser, we already know what’s coming – Galaxy A8 Star.
Samsung has also provided a slight cue about the price of the Galaxy A8 Star. The teaser mentions that the smartphone will be available at Rs 3X,XXX, which implies a minimum price of Rs 30,000.
Exciting as all that sounds, the Galaxy A8 Star isn’t exactly a new device. The smartphone was launched a few months back in China, as Galaxy A9 Star. Following that, Samsung launched it in the Philippines, but not before branding it as Galaxy A8 Star. Now that the smartphone is coming to India, it’s quite possible it’ll arrive with a different moniker. After all, we all know Samsung has a thing for launching (and relaunching) same stuff with different names.
Talking about hardware, the Galaxy A8 Star will sit squarely in the upper mid-range slot. The smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC, paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The dual-SIM smartphone has a hybrid slot that can accept microSD cards of up to 512GB. It runs Android Oreo out-of-the-box, with Samsung’s Experience UX overlay baked on top.
Samsung Galaxy A8 Star isn’t exactly a compact smartphone. It features a 6.3-inch FullHD+ Super AMOLED panel with a resolution 1080×2220 pixels and an 18.5:9 aspect ratio.

For imaging, the Galaxy A8 Star features a dual-camera system at the back. It’s comprised of a 24-megapixel sensor and a 16-megapixel sensor, each with an f/1.7 aperture. Up front, you get a 24-megapixel (f/2.0) for selfies and video calls.
Samsung Galaxy A8 Star has all the connectivity options you’d expect in a 2018 smartphone, ranging from Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac to USB Type-C. There’s also a 3.5mm audio port and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. A 3,700mAh battery backs up the entire package.
