With 2018 coming to an end, Samsung has brought its quad-camera smartphone Galaxy A9 (2018) to the Indian shores. Recently OnePlus also launched its mid-cycle refresh OnePlus 6T in the country, whereas Xiaomi introduced Poco F1, and earlier this year, Asus introduced the Zenfone 5Z. In terms of pricing, all four smartphones are somewhat closer to each other when it comes to high-end variants at least. While some may qualify as premium models, some are pure flagship smartphones for the respective companies.
Overall, the 2018 mid-premium flagship war has moved up a ladder after new Galaxy A9 which boasts of ‘world’s first quad-camera setup’ and OnePlus 6 with a new in-display fingerprint sensor. In this post, we are also comparing these latest entries with Xiaomi’s popular value-for-money flagship Poco F1 and Asus’ ambitious AI-centric Zenfone 5Z, which was originally launched to take on the OnePlus 6. Price in India
Samsung’s newly launched Galaxy A9 (2018) starts at Rs 36,990 for the 6GB RAM and 128GB storage model, while the top-end 8GB RAM with 128GB storage variant is priced at Rs 39,990. As for the OnePlus 6T, the smartphone starts at Rs 37,999 for the base 6GB RAM/ 128GB storage. The 8GB RAM/ 128GB storage model of the OnePlus 6T costs Rs 41,999 and the 8GB RAM/ 256GB storage model costs Rs 45,999.
On the other hand, we know Poco F1 is the most affordable of the lot. The prices for base 6GB RAM and 64GB storage variant of Poco F1 start at Rs 20,999, whereas the top end model with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage is available for Rs 29,999 via Flipkart. The Asus Zenfone 5Z is the company’s flagship range smartphone in India. The prices for Asus Zenfone 5Z start at Rs 29,999 and go up to Rs 36,999. This is also available via Flipkart.
Design and display
In terms of design, all four phones look very different from each other. Additionally, the Samsung Galaxy A9 is only smartphone out of the lot which doesn’t pack a ‘notch’ display. The glass-metal combination design is common factor between three phones except Poco F1, which uses polycarbonate as primary element. OnePlus has introduced similar OnePlus 6-like design on the 6T, except it has ditched headphone jack and there is no fingerprint sensor at the back.
Talking about the display, Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) boats of a 6.3-inch full-HD+ Infinity Display without a notch, which is a Super AMOLED panel and offers 18.5:9 aspect ratio. OnePlus 6T comes with a 6.4-inch full HD+ panel with 1080x2340pixels resolution, and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The notch on 6T is much smaller, like the Oppo F9 Pro. Coming to Poco F1, it sports a 6.18-inch full-HD+ 18.7:9 aspect ratio screen with a large notch. Lastly, the Asus Zenfone 5Z comes with 6.2-inch full-HD+ panel featuring 18:9 aspect ratio, and a notch similar to Poco F1.
Chipset, RAM and storage
Samsung Galaxy A9 is the only smartphone in this comparison which packs a mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC, while all other smartphones – OnePlus 6T, Poco F1 and Asus Zenfone 5Z – are powered by Qualcomm’s top-end Snapdragon 845 SoC. While the Samsung Galaxy A9 and OnePlus 6T now starts with 128GB storage as the base variant, the other two still come with 64GB/ 128GB/ 256GB storage options. Samsung for its top-end variant of 8GB RAM also offers 128GB storage option only, while others come with 256GB RAM option as well. OnePlus has also kept a 256GB storage model paired with 8GB RAM. The Poco F1 and Asus Zenfone 5Z also share similar 6GB/ 8GB SKUs like the OnePlus with a different storage option.
In the photography department, Samsung has taken a huge leap by adding two extra cameras at the back of Galaxy A9. It boasts of a quad-camera setup at the back, which is first of its kind for any smartphone. This setup includes a 24-megapixel camera with f/1.7 aperture, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, 10-megapixel telephoto lens offering 2x optical zoom, and a 5-megapixel depth sensor of f/2.2 aperture.
Other phones – OnePlus 6T, Poco F1 and Asus Zenfone 5Z – include dual-rear camera setup only. The OnePlus 6T comes with dual cameras at the back, which includes a 16-megapixel primary sensor and a 20-megapixel secondary sensor (telephoto lens), both featuring f/1.7 aperture. Up front, there is a 16-megapixel snapper for selfies and video calling.
As for the Poco F1, it comes with a 12-megapixel primary camera along with a 5-megapixel secondary sensor to add depth-of-field effects to your photos. Xiaomi has also added AI tweaks with scene detection and portrait mode to help you capture better photos. There is also a 20-megapixel front camera with AI beauty mode.
Coming to the Asus Zenfone 5Z, its dual-rear camera setup includes a 12-megapixel + 8-megapixel sensors, and an 8-megapixel front camera. The second rear camera of 8-megapixel resolution has a wide-angle 120-degrees field of view which lets you capture more from a scene similar to Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018).
Face Unlock is standard in all four smartphones. Talking about fingerprint scanner, the Samsung Galaxy A9, Asus Zenfone 5Z and Poco F1 do have a fingerprint scanner at the back, while OnePlus 6T has incorporated latest technology in the market. OnePlus 6T comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner, which works through the screen of the phone and has 0.34ms unlock time.
The Samsung Galaxy A9 comes with Android 8.0 Oreo-based Samsung Experience UX. The Asus Zenfone 5Z and and Xiaomi Poco F1 also run Android Oreo, but the OnePlus 6T offers latest Android 9 Pie out-of-the-box. Having said that, the Poco F1 is in line to get the latest OS update later this year, and Asus will be rolling it out next year in January.
