Samsung today launched two J-series smartphones, the Galaxy J5 (2016) and a slightly expensive and more powerful Galaxy J7 (2016). Both the smartphones are the refreshed versions of last year’s Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7, and come equipped with upgraded hardware. We compared the Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) with its closest competitors such as the Micromax Canvas 6, the Lenovo Vibe P1 and the Honor 5X based on their price specifications and features. Price: The Galaxy J7 (2016) is priced at Rs 15,990 and will go on sale starting May 10, exclusively on Flipkart. The Canvas 6 from Micromax is priced at Rs 13,999 and is available for pre-booking on its e-store. Lenovo’s Vibe P1 and Honor’s 5X are available on Flipkart and are priced at Rs 15,499 and Rs 12,999, respectively. Display, processor and RAM: All four smartphones are equipped with a 5.5-inch full HD display running at a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. The Galaxy J7 (2016) is powered by an octa-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz and paired with 2GB of RAM. The Canvas 6 is powered by MediaTek Helio MT6795m octa-core processor clocked at a 2GHz and paired with 3GB of RAM, whereas the the Vibe P1 and Honor 5X is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 615 64-bit octa-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz and paired with 2GB of RAM. Storage: The Galaxy J7 (2016) is equipped with 16GB internal storage, Vibe P1 has 32GB of onboard storage, Honor 5X has 16GB of storage, whereas the Canvas 6 has 32GB of onboard storage. All smartphones also come with a microSD card slot, allowing you to further expand the storage.
Camera: Samsung has equipped the J7 (2016) with a 13-megapixel rear snapper and a 5-megapixel front-facing unit. With an aperture of f/1.9, both front and rear cameras are equipped with an LED flash. Honor’s 5X is equipped with a 13-megapixel rear camera of aperture f/2.0 with dual-LED flash and a 5-megpaixel selfie camera, Lenovo’s Vibe P1 also has a 13-megapixel rear snapper and 5-megapixel front facing unit, whereas the Canvas 6 has 13-megapixel rear camera and a front-facing 8-megapixel unit.
Battery: While the J7 (2016) comes with a 3,300mAh battery, the Canvas 6 and Honor 5X are equipped with a 3,000mAh battery. The Lenovo Vibe P1, on the other hand, is loaded with a massive 5,000mAh battery, which the company claims to offer talktime of up to 44 hours.
Connectivity and OS: In terms of connectivity, all smartphones feature Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 4G LTE and dual SIM card slots. On the software front, Samsung’s Galaxy J7 (2016) runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS wrapped under TouchWiz UI. Rest all the competing smartphones run on Android Lollipop OS with a layer of manufacturer customized UI running atop.
Other features: All four smartphones are equipped with a metal body, which adds a dash of premium look and feel to them. And while the Lenovo P1, Honor 5X and Canvas 6 are equipped with fingerprint scanner for biometric authentication, the Galaxy J7 (2016) misses out on that.
On paper, the Canvas 6, Lenovo P1 and Honor 5X clearly have an advantage over Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016), however, we will reserve out judgment until we review all four devices.
