Samsung launched a new mid-range smartphone in India under its Galaxy J-series yesterday. Called Galaxy J7 Duo, the highlights of the smartphone include dual cameras at the back, and Face Unlock feature. The Galaxy J7 Duo will compete with the likes of Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro and the recently launched Nokia 6 (2018). The Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo is priced at Rs 16,990, and will be available to purchase online and via offline retail stores starting today. Xiaomi s Redmi Note 5 Pro is available through flash sale model with the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage model priced at Rs 13,999, and the 6GB RAM with 64GB storage model priced at Rs 16,999. Display, chipset, RAM and storage
The Galaxy J7 Duo comes with a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED HD display, with the traditional 16:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by the Exynos 7870 octa-core SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 32GB storage, which is expandable using a microSD card.
The Nokia 6 (2018) also comes with a 5.5-inch IPS LCD full HD (1080p) display with an aspect ratio of 16:9. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 octa-core SoC paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB storage. There is also a 4GB RAM with 64GB storage variant, but that hasn t been launched in India, yet.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro features a 5.99-inch full HD+ tall display with 18:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 octa-core SoC with 4GB or 6GB of RAM with 64GB onboard storage, and expandable via a microSD card.
As mentioned, the Galaxy J7 Duo comes with dual cameras at the back. The setup includes a 13-megapixel primary sensor of aperture f/1.9 and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor with aperture f/1.9. Samsung has included Live Focus mode that lets you add DSLR-like bokeh effects to your photos. For selfies and video calling, there is an 8-megapixel front camera of aperture f/1.9.
The Nokia 6 (2018), comes with a 16-megapixel rear snapper of aperture f/2.0 and Carl ZEISS optics, and an 8-megapixel front camera. The Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, comes with dual camera setup at the back, which includes a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor that let you add depth of field effects to your photos. Up front, you have a 20-megapixel sensor for selfies and video calling.
Connectivity and battery
In terms of connectivity, all three smartphones come with dual-SIM card slots with 4G LTE and VoLTE for HD voice calling. The smartphones also include Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi connectivity options. While the Galaxy J7 Duo and Redmi Note 5 Pro come with microUSB port, the Nokia 6 (2018) features USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer.
To keep things ticking, the Galaxy J7 Pro comes with a 3,000mAh removable battery, whereas the Nokia 6 (2018) comes with a 3,000mAh non-removable battery. The Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, comes with a massive 4,000mAh battery and supports Quick Charge 2.0 feature as well.
Software and features
In the software department, the Galaxy J7 Duo runs Android Oreo out-of-the-box with Samsung Experience UI on top. The Nokia 6 (2018) also runs Android Oreo, but with stock Android UI. The Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, runs on the older Android 7.1 Nougat OS with MIUI 9 skin on top.
All three smartphones also feature fingerprint sensors for biometric authentication. While the sensor on the Galaxy J7 Duo is placed on the front, under the display, the Nokia 6 (2018) and the Redmi Note 5 Pro have the sensors placed at the back. Lastly, the Xiaomi and Samsung smartphones also include face unlock feature, which is missing from the Nokia phone.
