With various flagship phones like the Samsung Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 3 and the Sony Xperia Z2 offering 4K video modes, it’s inevitable they are compared with other professional video cameras. Canon 5D Mk III might not be an out and out video camera, but it’s one of the most widely used devices by DSLR videographers. And one such cinematographer Alec Weinstein came up with the idea of comparing his Galaxy Note 3 to his workhorse 5D Mk III.  Also Read - Samsung introduces three automotive chips for seamless 5G connectivity, vehicle infotainment

On paper, the two devices are separated by weather-sealing, top quality imagery, professional features, and the ability to shoot RAW video on the Canon. The Samsung, about Rs 150,000 cheaper than Canon isn’t lagging behind in terms of features either. It offers 4K video (versus 5D mkIII’s full HD), comes with a larger display and better portability, and can upload videos on the go as well. While it’s clear that a Galaxy Note 3 cannot replace a 5D Mk III, the video comparison shows how far we’ve come in terms of smartphones. For comparison, Alex used a similar color profile on the footage shot on the Canon to match that of the Galaxy Note 3. Yes, there’s low light, there’s action, and there’s the availability of manual controls where the 5D mk III still offers more than its competitors, let alone a smartphone. But if we are talking about a full HD (1920×1080 pixels) video shot on a DSLR compared to a 4K video downscaled to full HD shot on a smartphone, we know who’s the winner!
