Chipset and RAM

Both, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S9+ are powered by the Exynos 9810 SoC or Snapdragon 845 SoC, which will be region dependent. The Galaxy Note 8, on the other hand, is powered by Snapdragon 835 or Exynos 8895 SoC, which again is region dependent. In terms of memory, both the Galaxy S9+ and Galaxy Note 8 come with 6GB of RAM, whereas the Galaxy Note 9 comes with 6GB RAM on the base model, and 8GB RAM on the top-end model.

Storage

Samsung has upgraded the base storage to 128GB for the Galaxy Note 9, and the other variant comes with 512GB onboard storage. There is also a hybrid microSD card slot with support for up to 512GB, which means you can have a total of 1TB storage on your phone.

The Galaxy Note 8 was offered in 64GB storage, and expandable up to 256GB via a microSD card, whereas the Galaxy S9+ comes with 64GB / 128GB or 256GB storage options, along with microSD card support.

Cameras

All three smartphones come with dual camera setup at the back. Up front, there is an 8-megapixel auto-focus camera for selfies and video calling, which is common on all smartphones. Talking about rear camera, the Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S9+ come with a 12-megapixel primary camera with dual aperture wide-angle lens (f/1.5 – f/2.4), paired with a 12-megapixel secondary camera with telephoto lens. The secondary camera helps in 2X optical lossless zoom and for adding bokeh effects to your photos.

The Galaxy Note 8, on the other hand, also comes with dual cameras at the back – one is a 12-megapixel camera with wide-angle lens and aperture of f/1.7, and the other is a 12-megapixel camera with telephoto lens. Just like the S9+ and Note 9, the secondary camera lets you add DSLR like bokeh effects to your photos or capture photos with 2X optical lossless zoom.

Both cameras on the three smartphones come with optical image stabilization (OIS) support, 4K video recording capabilities, and slow-motion video recording. While the Galaxy Note 8 supports 240fps recording in HD quality, the Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S9+ comes with 960fps slow motion video recording in HD quality.

Battery and connectivity

The Galaxy Note 9 comes with the biggest battery capacity of 4,000mAh, the Galaxy S9+ comes with a 3,500mAh battery, whereas the Galaxy Note 8 comes with 3,300mAh capacity. All three smartphones include fast charging capabilities, along with wireless charging.

Talking about connectivity, all three smartphones come with USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer, dual SIM card slots, 4G LTE with VoLTE HD voice calling, Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi 802.11ac.

Operating system

The Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S9, all run on Android 8.0 Oreo with Samsung Experience UI on top. And with Google to soon release Android P in the next few weeks, it will be interesting to see how soon Samsung can update these smartphones to the latest OS.

Security

For biometric authentication, all three smartphones come with a fingerprint scanner and iris scanner. The Galaxy S9+ and Note 9 also come with an intelligent scan feature which combines face unlock and iris scanner.

Extras

Talking about extra features, all three smartphones come with IP68 certification for water and dust resistance and a heart rate sensor. Dolby Atmos and stereo speakers are some of the additions on the Note 9 and S9+. Also, one of the upgraded features of the Galaxy Note 9 is the Bluetooth-enabled S Pen that lets you remotely unlock your smartphone, control music playback and use it as a remote camera shutter.
