Samsung unveiled the much-anticipated Galaxy Note 9 at its Galaxy Unpacked Event last night in New York. While the flagship smartphone was the highlight of the event, Samsung also had plenty of the surprises for its fans along the way. At the event yesterday, the South Korean giant also unveiled a new smartwatch, debuted Fortnite on Android, introduced a new wireless charger and finally made its entrant in the smart home speaker space.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 with the Bluetooth enabled S Pen

While all the rumors and leaks leading up to the launch revealed pretty much everything about the Galaxy Note 9 in advance, we can’t still be impressed by it. The Galaxy Note 9 comes with a premium design with glass back and neatly cut edges. It will be available in four color options of Ocean Blue, Midnight Black, Lavender Purple and Metallic Copper.

The smartphone no doubt comes with premium hardware including a 6.4-inch QHD+ (1440x2960pixels) Super AMOLED display, with an aspect ratio of 18.5:9. It will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC or Exynos 9810 SoC, depending on the region you purchase it in. It comes with 6GB of RAM and minimum storage configuration of 128GB. The high-end variant comes with 8GB RAM and whopping 512GB onboard storage. It is backed by a 4,000mAh battery which is biggest battery featured on a Galaxy Note device yet.

One of the biggest highlight of the device is the new S Pen, which now is enabled with Bluetooth Low-energy (BLE) connectivity. This means that over the stylus functionality, the S Pen can be used as a remote control for the Note 9, allowing users to remotely click pictures, play and pause content, and even control presentations. It supports a radius of 10 meters. The best part of supporting BLE is that the S Pen can run continuously for 30 minutes and can be charged merely in 40 seconds. More functionality, across applications will be added to the handy companion in the future.

Fortnite on Galaxy devices

Fortnite is currently the most popular battle royale game on the planet right now, and it is finally coming to Android through Galaxy devices. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney took to the stage at Barclays Center yesterday and announced that Fortnite will be coming to Galaxy devices first and will be available to the rest of the Android community starting next week. However, the game available to Galaxy users is the beta version and not the final version of Fortnite.

That said, the game is currently downloadable on Samsung devices through the Galaxy app store and will be compatible with Samsung Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S9, S9+, Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8, S8+, Galaxy S7, and Galaxy S7 Edge. In addition to that, the company is also giving users who pre-order the Galaxy Note 9 an option to get 15,000 V-bucks (in-game currency for Fortnite) for an additional $99.

Samsung Galaxy Watch

While Samsung was speculated to launch the Galaxy Watch at IFA this year, the company surprised everybody by unveiling their new Galaxy Smartwatch at the event yesterday. The overall design is the same as the Gear S3, but the new smartwatch comes in two sizes of 42mm and 46mm. Both carry the circular Super AMOLED display with 360×360 pixels resolution and come powered with Samsung’s Exynos 9110 dual-core chipset.

The smartwatch will also be available in two variants – a Wi-Fi and a Wi-Fi/LTE variant. Samsung has also improved fitness tracking features and has made the device waterproof. The 42mm variant features a 270mAh battery, while the 46mm variant features a 472mAh battery. The Galaxy Watch will be available in the US from August 24 and in other countries from September 14.

Samsung also launched the Wireless Charger Duo alongside the smartphone and the smartwatch. The charger can be used to wirelessly charge the Galaxy Watch and a supported Galaxy smartphone simultaneously. It also supports fast charging.

Samsung Galaxy Home speaker

Samsung might be a little late to the smart home speaker market, but it has finally arrived with the new Galaxy Home speaker. The new speaker features a circular design planted on three metal legs. It comes with eight built-in microphones and six built-in speakers that are tuned by AKG to deliver a premium sound output. But perhaps its main highlight is that it comes powered with Bixby. The speaker can simply be activated by saying, “Hi Bixby,” followed with command or a request. Price and other details weren’t revealed.

Samsung also announced its partnership with the music streaming giant Spotify. Now Galaxy users will be able to sync up their Spotify account with Bixby, making it their default music player on the device. The integration will work across Samsung products including their Smart TVs as well.
