After the launch of Samsung Galaxy Note 9, the focus has now shifted on the Galaxy S10, which is rumored to launch early next year, either at CES 2019 in Las Vegas or MWC 2019 in Barcelona. And over the past couple of months, interesting details about the upcoming S-series smartphone have surfaced. Now, as per the latest report Samsung is joining the AI race, and the chipset powering the Galaxy S10 is expected to come with a dedicated NPU for AI-based tasks.
Today, when we talk AI, many people associate the term with voice assistants. However, AI can do a lot more such as image and face recognition, and optimizing tasks, to name a few. Chipsets from Apple and Huawei have dedicated NPUs to handle AI-based tasks, whereas chipsets from Qualcomm and MediaTek also have some AI chops in them.

A reliable leaker (@UniverseIce) has posted a screenshot on Twitter which offers details on what Samsung is working on. The profile of an employee clearly states responsibilities, one of which includes “Samsung’s second-gen NPU, responsible for top-level modeling of NPU in SystemC.”
The description also notes about architectural changes in NPU for power and performance optimization, along with designing micro-architecture of units in NPU. All these hint that the upcoming chipset – Exynos 9820 will most likely come with a dedicated NPU for AI processing.
Based on what we have already come across, the Galaxy S10 will be offered in three different models. One will be a compact device with single camera at the back, whereas the other two will come with triple rear cameras and an in-display fingerprint scanner.
