After what seemed like a long wait for many, Samsung finally took the wraps off the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge at its Unpacked event at MWC in Barcelona. Less than a month later, the South Korean company today launched the two smartphones in India. The Galaxy S6 price starts at Rs 49,900, while the Galaxy S6 Edge price starts at Rs 58,900, and both the smartphones will go on sale on April 10.The two smartphones come in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB variants, without a microSD card slot. The Galaxy S6 is priced at Rs 49,900, Rs 55,900 and Rs 61,900 for 32GB, 64GB and 128GB respectively. The Galaxy S6 Edge, on the other hand, is priced at Rs 58,900, Rs 64,900 and Rs 70,900 for 32GB, 64GB and 128GB respectively. In line with what had been reported last year, Samsung has designed the two new smartphones from scratch as a part of Project Zero. Gone is the cheap plastic finish and instead the new smartphones are all about metal and glass. The flagship smartphones look unlike any of the previous Samsung smartphones, boasting a body made out of Gorilla Glass 4 and metal. At its Unpacked 2015 event, Samsung took pot shots at Apple’s iPhone 6, claiming the Galaxy S6 won’t bend! However, Samsung did have to let go of some features from the Galaxy S5, like waterproofing, expandable memory and removable battery, to achieve the new design. As expected, Samsung s flagship features top-of-the specifications. The Galaxy S6 flaunts a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED QHD (2560 1440 pixels) display with a pixel density of 577ppi. Instead of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chipset, Samsung has opted for its own Exynos 7420 octa-core (2.1GHz quad-core+1.5GHz quad-core) chipset paired with 3GB of RAM.
On the photography front, it features a 16-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization, supplemented with a 5-megapixel camera at the front. As mentioned above, it comes in 32GB/64GB/128GB variants and just like the iPhone there is no expandable microSD card slot. It has a non-removable 2,550mAh battery with Ultra Power Saving Mode and wireless charging capabilities. There is also support for fast-charging, which should charge the battery from zero to 50 percent in less than 30 minutes.
Just like the Galaxy S5, it comes with a heart rate monitor, and an improved fingerprint scanner. Unlike on the Galaxy S5, users won t need to swipe their finger, and just touching it should suffice. It is quite similar to how Apple’s TouchID works and is said to perform better than the fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S5. Connectivity options include LTE support, NFC, IR Blaster, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, and on the software front, it runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop out-of-the-box, wrapped under an overhauled TouchWiz UI.
The Galaxy S6 Edge s USP is its curved display. Unlike the Galaxy Note Edge launched last year, the display on the Galaxy S6 Edge curves on both sides, and all the way to the back. The curved portion acts as a secondary display where you can view notifications and launch applications with one hand. As for specifications, they are nearly identical to the Galaxy S6, albeit with small changes. While the size and resolution of the display remain the same, the display curves on both sides. The other difference is a minutely bigger battery at 2,600mAh.
While the smartphones are yet to go on sale, a few publications have jumped the gun and posted video reviews. Overall impressions are quite positive, and you can check out a roundup of the reviews here.
