So, looks like Samsung Galaxy S8 s new digital assistant, Bixby, is gearing up to take on Apple s Siri. If the latest word is to be believed, Samsung is rumored to offer visual search capabilities in the upcoming Galaxy S8 allowing users to search for objects identified in a photograph with the help of the smartphone s digital assistant. Essentially, the camera app on the device will feature a Bixby mode, which will allow users an access to a virtual search tool, which will process whatever the camera is being pointed at. Using Optical character recognition (OCR) capability, Bixby will be able to recognize text, images or identify objects within that frame. Additionally, this Bixby feature will do more than just recognition, reports SamMobile. The feature is expected to come with extended functionality and a high degree of interconnectedness to other applications. For instance it will help users find where they can buy an identified object, and then make the purchase as well.
To put the latter bit on purchases through Bixby in perspective, it was recently reported that the virtual assistant on the Galaxy S8 will come integrated with Samsung Pay mini, allowing payments directly via Bixby. Leaked on Samsung s own website, Samsung Pay Mini is believed to come pre-installed on the smartphone. For the ones mulling the Mini in the app moniker, it is believed to be a stripped-down version of Samsung s mobile payment system, Samsung Pay. It is expected to let users make online payments only, unlike the regular version of the feature that also takes care of payments for transactions made in physical stores. Basically, this means that the Galaxy S8 may possibly allow access to transaction-only Samsung Pay Mini, Samsung Pay for shopping, and the option to control the app through the integrated digital assistant, Bixby.
The reports about complete integration of Bixby into the Samsung Galaxy S8 came in last month. Unlike S Voice, the new digital assistant would be a lot more advanced and will work system-wide. Basically, the new Samsung virtual assistant would work a lot similar to how Siri works in iOS 10. You can use Siri to access most of the native apps, and with the iOS 10, the assistant now supports some third party apps like Uber and WhatsApp as well.
While all these years, Samsung has unveiled its flagship devices at Mobile World Congress (MWC), this time, being extra careful after the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, the device is being rumored to be unveiled sometime in late March or early April. Some people are also betting on March 29 to be the day of unveiling.
