You know it’s a good day, when you start off with a bunch of Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ leaks! The latest to join the big league of leaks is the possibility of no under-screen fingerprint sensor on the smartphones, as speculated earlier. And the other is a teaser from Samsung itself, which hints at a few features and color variations of the device. Talking about the Samsung teaser first, it sort of looks like the South Korean company is trying to take all the hype and excitement around the upcoming Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ to another level. Bringing a little twist in the teasing, instead of just releasing a poster or a short video about the devices, Samsung has released a little questionnaire on the sign-up page of its India website, and one poll on the website of its Brazilian retailer Submarino. On the India page, Samsung basically lists down multiple options to choose from that a user is expecting in the ‘Next Galaxy’ device, like a superior camera, dust and water resistance, enhanced battery life, etc. After you tick your picks, the name and contact detail that you feed in is registered with Samsung. While the poll is sort of disappointing after you have submitted it, however, it is kind of exciting when you realise, Samsung is actually hinting all these feature on the Galaxy S8 and S8+. Further, Big Brazilian retailer Submarino has also recently started polling its customers about the Galaxy S8. The store, however, doesn’t include any of the aforementioned features in its survey, and is instead asking users what color would they prefer for the new device, Black, Silver, or Amethyst. (Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz often used in jewelry.)
The layout of the Brazilian webpage is quite identical to that of Samsung’s official site, which also hints that Samsung may be launching an “Amethyst” color variant of the Galaxy S8 beside the more common color variations we have seen so far. Furthermore, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also recently indicated that we’re going to see an “orchid” color for the new phone which was then illustrated by a Chinese leakster alongside five other variations.
Moving on to the other leak of the day, it’s sort of disappointing. So from we have learnt from the myriad of leaks and speculations in the past few months, we know that Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will be the first Galaxy devices to come sans the home button on the front. Since this information got out, there has long been a word that while the devices may feature a home button at the back, Samsung will be using an under-screen fingerprint sensor for the smartphones. Now, if the rumor is to be believed, according to a report on The Investor, the upcoming Galaxy S8 is unlikely to feature on-screen fingerprint scanning after its touch sensor partner Synaptics ran out of time for developing the related technology.
“Samsung poured resources into Synaptics’ fledgling technology last year but the results were frustrating,” the publication quoted a source as saying. “With the production imminent, the company had to decide to relocate the fingerprint scanning home button to the back of the device at the last minute.”
Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ specifications and features
The Samsung Galaxy S8 could feature a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED QHD display while the Galaxy S8+ is expected to come with a 6.2-inch display. Reports suggest that depending on the region, the Galaxy S8 and the larger variant could be powered by two different processors. Therefore, under the hood, the smartphones will either be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset or Samsung’s own Exynos 8895 SoC. Additionally, all models are likely to be equipped with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage along with support for storage expansion up to 2TB.
For photography, the Galaxy S8 may sport a 12-megapixel Dual-Pixel rear camera along with LED flash. Up front, the smartphone is likely to come with an 8-megapixel sensor, accompanied with an iris scanner, which is believed to work in addition to the rear fingerprint sensor for biometric authentication. On the software front, both models are likely to run Android 7.1 Nougat out-of-the-box with a layer of TouchWiz UI on top.
Samsung will be hosting its Unpacked event on March 29 when it will be officially taking the wraps off its new Galaxy smartphones. While earlier there were reports of the device going on sale from April 21, new leaks suggest that the sale may be delayed by a few days.
