Samsung is all set to unveil the Galaxy S8 at its Unpacked event on March 29. With less than a month to the event, the rumor mills have been buzzing and there seems to be little that we don’t know about the upcoming flagship smartphone. Adding to the list are these new leaks that reveal new information about the Galaxy S8’s display, the different variants, and a possible pre-order date.
Samsung recently filed a patent with the USPTO for the term ‘Infinity Display’. Spotted by GalaxyClub, this patent possibly hints at a display on the Galaxy S8 that could boast an aspect ration of 18:9. In other words, this could be Samsung’s version of the FullVision Display, which was recently introduced on the new LG G6. With this ratio, the display is essentially twice as tall as it is wide. By increasing the height of the display while keeping the width in check, Samsung will be able to fit a bigger display in a form factor that is not much bigger than last year’s Galaxy S7.
The near bezel-less display is again seen in a couple of alleged hands-on images that have surfaced online, courtesy of Slashleaks. The front of the device is dominated by the dual-edged curved display with nearly invisible bezels. At the bottom gone is the physical home button, and the device instead seems to come with on-screen navigation buttons. As for the fingerprint sensor, it is placed at the back adjacent to the camera. A short hands-on video has also surfaced online showing the Galaxy S8 from all possible angles.
Samsung is expected to launch its flagship smartphone in two variants, dubbed Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Apart from the difference in the display, both variants are likely to feature pretty much the same set of specifications and features. Under the hood is expected to either be Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 chipset or Exynos 8895 Soc depending on the region.
The rest of the rumored specifications include 4GB of RAM, 64GB/128GB storage options, microSD card slot, 12-megapixel Dual-Pixel rear camera along with LED flash, and an 8-megapixel auto-focus selfie camera. Apart from a fingerprint sensor, Samsung’s smartphones are also expected to feature an iris scanner for an extra layer of security. On the software front, both models are likely to run on Android 7.1 Nougat out-of-the-box with a layer of TouchWiz UI on top.
